An easy-to-read, six-line display tells you the channel name and number, category, artist name, song title, and time simultaneously. The receiver also lets you program up to 30 presets of your favorite streams, as well as search by stream, artist name, song title, or category. And with a quick press of the One-Touch Jump button, you can instantly switch between the traffic and weather reports for your city or any of the other music, news, or entertainment channels. Other programming details include an S-Seek function that stores your favorite artists and songs and alerts you when one is playing on any of the music channels, direct station tuning via the numeric buttons, and a channel lock option. Time functions, meanwhile, include an onscreen clock, alarm, and sleep timer, as well as a program alert that allows the unit to switch to a preprogrammed stream at a selected time.

The Sportster 4 really earns its stripes, however, with its variety of enhanced features designed specifically for sports lovers. The Game Alert feature prompts you when your favorite NFL or other sports teams are playing on Sirius. The Game Zone lists all of your favorite teams in one virtual category and lets you select a different team from each of the various sports leagues, including the NFL, NBA, NHL, and college sports. And what sports fan could do without the Sportster's instant replay function, which lets you pause, rewind, and replay 44 minutes of live radio? As soon as you tune to a channel, the receiver automatically begins storing the audio for later playback.

The Sportster 4 also includes a built-in FM transmitter that sends Sirius radio programming to your vehicle's FM tuner, so you don't have to make a direct connection to enjoy the full array of channels. Simply set an empty FM frequency on your radio and tune the Sportster 4 to the same frequency. This function also works with other FM tuners, such as the one on your home stereo, but is easily paired with the car thanks to the bundled vehicle kit, which includes everything you need for listening to Sirius while driving. Components include a vehicle docking station, a suction cup mount, a vent mount, a DC power supply that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter, a roof-mount antenna, and mounting hardware.

What Sirius (and Xm) don't want you to know. : SIRIUS Sportster 4 Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit

Eager to get it, I ultimately ordered the new Sportster 4 online. It didn't take long for me to be profoundly disappointed in the unit.

The qoute is with the Sportster's Fm converter: It's essentially worthless. I was unable to find a single frequency that wasn't branch to some sort of interference. Even the frequencies I use with the Starmate Replay were picking up static and/or bursts of music from elsewhere. In fact, at the lower end of the Fm spectrum (the 88's and 89's) I got nothing. Zip. Nada. Even on the fully blank frequencies there was just nothing there. ultimately nearby the 90.1 range you would be able to make out whichever channel you were trying to listen to. The upper frequencies were "listenable," provided you were willing to put up with the interference.

I ultimately decided to hook up the old Starmate again and put the units straight through a head-to-head competition. I set both receivers to the same Fm frequency and the Starmate consistently overpowered the Fm transmitter from the Sportster. I've positively tried the same experiment before, in the middle of the Starmate and an Xm unit, and the follow should be one signal or an additional one getting through, but with a lot of interference. The bottom line is that the Sportster's Fm converter is weak approximately to the point of being non-existent.

I don't know what follow using a direct associate Fm modulator would have on this shortcoming.

The second qoute is that the power and antenna cables associate directly to the back of the cradle, Not the sides. The end follow is that the back of the radio is no longer a level surface, and you can no longer plainly velcro the unit to the dashboard. It does come with that annoying standard-issue suction cup mount or a vent mount. I'm not a big fan of either mounting method, however.

On the plus side: If you are able to playback with either a cassette adapter or a direct associate cable, you will like the Sportster 4. It's a beautifully sleek looking unit and the discrete controls are laid out well. The blue backlight is just a bit weak during the day, but unobtrusive at night.

Buying added cradles--whether for the house or other cars--makes spicy the radio from one location to an additional one a snap since you don't have to deal with connecting and disconnecting discrete cables.
